Wickers Held as Title Race Goes to the Wire

Wickers Held as Title Race Goes to the Wire

Match Report: Hackney Wick FC 2 - 2 Newbury Forest FC

Hackney Wick FC suffered a major setback in their title bid as they were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw by relegated Newbury Forest in the penultimate match of the season.

Knowing that two wins from their final two games would guarantee promotion, Hackney looked to be cruising early on. Top scorer Issa Sidibe fired the Wickers into a commanding lead, scoring twice inside the opening seven minutes, and it seemed like it was going to be a routine afternoon at the Simarco Stadium.

However, despite dominating possession and creating a host of chances, Hackney failed to extend their lead. Their wastefulness in front of goal came back to haunt them when Newbury pulled one back just before halftime, punishing Hackney for their missed opportunities.

As Hackney pushed to kill the game off, chance after chance went begging. Then, in the 86th minute, disaster struck—a Newbury breakaway ended with former player Ikenna Ohazue smashing home an equalizer, stunning the home crowd.

Hackney still created late chances to snatch victory, but Leo Pola and Klenti Loufi both missed golden opportunities.

With Harlow Town winning, the two sides are now level on points, but Harlow have the advantage heading into the final game. Hackney must now hope that bottom-placed St Margaretsbury can do them a favour by taking points off Harlow, while Hackney must focus on securing a win in their final game against May & Baker.

It’s a tense finish—but anything can happen.
