Hackney Wick FC suffered another disappointing defeat as Basildon United claimed all three points in a scrappy encounter that saw the hosts struggle to create meaningful opportunities.
The visitors took the lead in the 26th minute after Wilton Domingo conceded a penalty, which Spiros Lagopodis confidently converted to put Basildon ahead.
Despite looking to find a way back into the contest, Hackney struggled to establish any attacking rhythm, with clear-cut chances proving difficult to come by in a largely untidy affair.
Things went from bad to worse just four minutes after the restart when Kevin Zie doubled Basildon's advantage in the 49th minute, leaving Hackney with a mountain to climb.
Any hopes of mounting a comeback were dealt a further blow in the 63rd minute when Roberto Carvalho was shown a straight red card for pulling an opponent's hair, reducing the home side to ten men.
The dismissal effectively ended Hackney's hopes of a comeback, as they failed to find the attacking quality needed to trouble the visitors.
It was another frustrating afternoon for the Wick, who will be disappointed not only with the result but with their lack of creativity in the final third. In a match that was there to be contested, Hackney simply didn't produce enough going forward and were ultimately punished.
