Hackney Wick FC’s historic FA Cup journey came to an end on Saturday as Step 3 side Leiston FC ran out 4–1 winners at Victory Road. Despite the scoreline, it was a match of fine margins and missed chances for the Wickers, who can take immense pride from a run that has carried the club further than ever before in the competition.

Hackney started brightly and should have stunned their higher-league hosts with two early goals. Leo Pola twice found himself in excellent positions but was unable to convert, leaving Leiston off the hook.

The Suffolk side made no such mistakes when opportunities came their way. On 15 minutes, a penalty was awarded against Gerrard Thompson-Shaw for a foul inside the box. Although keeper Obaid Nassim guessed correctly and got a hand to it, the spot-kick squeezed in to make it 1–0.

Leiston’s dangerous number 11, Mills, doubled their advantage soon after with a sharp finish at the end of a counter-attack down the left.
Things worsened just before the break as another penalty was given — this time for handball against Andre Anderson. Leiston converted again, and within a minute added a fourth with a ruthless finish to leave Hackney shell-shocked at 4–0 at half-time.

As the heavens opened after the restart, Hackney regrouped and fought hard to restore some pride. They limited Leiston’s chances in the second half and created moments of their own going forward.

Their persistence was rewarded late on when Issa Sidibe got in behind and tucked away a consolation goal to make it 4–1. It wasn’t enough to spark an unlikely comeback, but it was no less than the visitors deserved for their effort and determination.

Defeat ends Hackney Wick’s best-ever run in the FA Cup, but the squad depart the competition with memories and achievements that will last a lifetime. From the away victory at Bearsted to the heroics at Knaphill, the Wickers have flown the flag proudly for Hackney and East London.

There’s little time to dwell on defeat, as Hackney Wick remain in knockout action next weekend. Attention turns to the FA Vase, where the Wickers face Saffron Walden Town in another tough but exciting cup tie.
The FA Cup dream may be over, but the journey this season is far from finished.
