Hackney Wick FC’s cup journey is over for this season after falling to a 3–0 defeat away at Saffron Walden Town in the FA Vase. The result, following last week’s FA Cup exit to Leiston, means the Wickers are now out of all FA competitions and will turn their focus fully back to the league campaign.
Hackney began the game brightly, taking the initiative and enjoying good spells of possession. However, much like last week, early dominance didn’t translate into goals.
The home side punished them in the 21st minute, when Saffron Walden’s number 9 rose highest to head home from a corner.
Minutes later, a penalty was awarded against Hackney as Finlay Parnum was judged to have tripped his man in the box. Keeper Obaid Nassim produced a fine save, only for the assistant referee to flag for an infringement. Nassim saved the retake brilliantly as well, but once again Hackney failed to clear their lines, and the number 9 pounced to slot in the rebound. 2–0 at the break, and a mountain to climb.
Any hopes of a comeback were extinguished almost immediately after the restart, when another corner was not dealt with and Saffron Walden made it 3–0. From there, the hosts managed the game well, restricting Hackney to half-chances and rarely being troubled in goal.
Despite plenty of effort, the Wickers could not find a way back, and the tie ended in disappointment.
It was a frustrating afternoon for Hackney, who leave the FA Vase earlier than hoped. But with the FA Cup and Vase journeys over, the squad can now channel their full energy into the league — where plenty of opportunities remain to build on the positive performances shown earlier this season.
The Wickers return to league duty next weekend with a trip to face Sporting Bengal United. After the highs of cup competition, it’s time to refocus, regroup, and get back to climbing the Essex Senior League table.
Come on you Wickers!
