Hackney Wick got their Essex Senior League campaign off to the perfect start with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over White Ensign at the Simarco Stadium in Witham.

The two sides shared the spoils in last season’s meetings, with the Wick claiming a 2-1 win at the Simarco before White Ensign responded with a 3-0 victory in the reverse fixture against a youthful Hackney Wick side. With both teams having taken a win apiece from those encounters, another closely contested affair was expected—and it certainly delivered.

White Ensign started the brighter of the two teams, creating early opportunities as they looked to take control of the contest. Hackney Wick gradually grew into the game, but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock in the 35th minute. A goalkeeping spill from Wayne Baker allowed Yedi Adalani to react quickest, tapping home from close range to give White Ensign a deserved lead.

The Wick responded well before the break, increasing the pressure in search of an equaliser. Their closest effort came when they struck the post, but White Ensign held firm to take a 1-0 advantage into half-time.

Hackney Wick emerged for the second half with renewed intensity and were rewarded in the 56th minute. Peter Oyetunji scored from close range with only the goalkeeper to beat before calmly placing a low finish into the corner to bring the hosts level.

In sweltering conditions, both teams continued to push for a winner in an entertaining end-to-end encounter. It was Hackney Wick who found the decisive moment, much to the delight of the home supporters. White Ensign goalkeeper Sami Ebrahim could only spill a dangerous cross into the six-yard box, allowing Roberto Carvalho to react quickest and tap home the winner, sparking jubilant celebrations.

After showing resilience to come from behind, Hackney Wick held on through the closing stages to secure a deserved 2-1 victory and collect an excellent three points to begin their Essex Senior League season in winning fashion.
