A very young Hackney Wick side — made up largely of 17 and 18-year-olds — were beaten by playoff-chasing Ilford FC, who started the day 6th in the table and still harbour promotion ambitions.
It was always going to be a tough task for The Wickers, fielding a whole new squad following the mass exodus of players following Ernest’s departure. Despite the inexperience, Hackney matched Ilford for large spells of the first half.
However, the visitors took the lead in the 26th minute after good play down the flank saw a low cross tapped in from close range. Hackney struggled to create clear chances, but the best opportunity of the half fell to debutant Enrico Picchi, who was denied when trying to round the keeper one-on-one. Ilford went into the break 1–0 up.
The second half saw Ilford step it up, pinning Hackney back in their own half for long periods. The Wickers defended resolutely, with goalkeeper Adeshinayo Awoniyi producing some excellent saves to keep the scoreline respectable.
Eventually, Ilford’s pressure told, and a scrappy goal in the 83rd minute sealed the points for the visitors.
A tough afternoon, but an important learning curve for this new-look, youthful Hackney Wick side.
