Hackney Wick FC returned to league action knowing only a win would keep their slim play-off hopes alive, and they delivered with a hard-fought 2–1 home victory over West Essex FC — despite playing an entire half with ten men.
There was a welcome return to the starting XI for Romaine Wallace-Barnes, making his first appearance since the opening game of the season, while Leo Pola also returned following a period away due to family bereavement.
First Half – Swift Response to Setback
Despite Hackney’s positive start, it was the visitors who struck first. A failure to fully clear their lines allowed a West Essex player to unleash a stunning volley that left the keeper with no chance.
The response was immediate. Adam Cheneti, once again pulling the strings, produced a delightful chipped pass into the path of Leo Pola, who smashed home confidently on his weaker left foot to level the score.
Moments later, Hackney turned the game on its head. Cheneti drove relentlessly from deep inside his own half before slipping the ball to Mosope “Eman” Oguntuga, who rifled an unstoppable finish into the top corner.
Hackney went into the break 2–1 up and full of belief.
Second Half – Grit and Resistance
The match took another turn shortly after half-time when Khaneil Brown was shown a second yellow card, reducing the Wickers to ten men for the remainder of the contest.
What followed was a display of courage, organisation, and resilience. West Essex threw everything forward, but Hackney defended superbly — blocking shots, winning headers, and protecting their goal with real determination.
Full-Time: Hackney Wick FC 2–1 West Essex FC
A huge win for the Wickers — not just for the points, but for the character shown under pressure. The victory keeps Hackney seven points off the play-off places, with belief still alive as the season enters its final stretch.
Goals:Pola, Oguntuga
Red Card: Brown (second yellow)
A performance built on heart, unity, and leadership — exactly what’s needed at this stage of the campaign.
Come on you Wickers.
