Hackney Wick FC began 2026 in style with a deserved 3–1 home victory over Athletic Newham, avenging the defeat suffered earlier in the season and reigniting hopes of a strong push towards the play-off places.
After weeks disrupted by injuries and absences, manager Ernest was finally able to field something close to his strongest XI — and the difference was clear from the first whistle.
First Half – Anderson Leads the Way
The Wickers controlled the opening exchanges and took a deserved lead on 22 minutes when the ever-reliable Andre Anderson found space in the box and finished neatly. Often the unsung hero of this side, Anderson once again proved his importance at both ends of the pitch.
Hackney doubled their advantage before the break. Adam Cheneti, making a welcome return, struck the post with a powerful effort and new striker Mosope Oguntuga was perfectly placed to tap in the rebound — his first goal in Wickers colours.
Second Half – Oguntuga at the Double
Hackney continued to dominate after the interval and wrapped up the points when Oguntuga grabbed his second of the afternoon, finishing confidently to make it 3–0.
Athletic Newham pulled one back late on through an unfortunate own goal by Obaid Nassim, but it was little more than a consolation as Hackney saw out the game comfortably.

A strong, confident performance and exactly the start Hackney Wick wanted for the new year. With key players back fit and firing, the Wickers will now look to build momentum and make a serious push for the play-off places in the months ahead.
