Hackney Wick FC’s mixed run of form continued as they fell to a 3–2 defeat away at Athletic Newham, in a match that swung back and forth before being settled by a late winner for the hosts.

The loss once again highlighted the Wickers’ frustrating pattern this season — impressive one week, undone the next — as Ernest’s side looked to build on the big win over Harwich but couldn’t hold on to take the points.

Athletic Newham took the lead early on through Akiljo Balliu, finishing well after a slick move down the right.

Hackney responded strongly and deservedly levelled in the 25th minute, with the in-form Adam Cheneti continuing his hot streak by slotting home from close range after a tidy passing move.

It was the first meeting between the sides for several seasons, and with former Wickers boss Chris Davis now managing Ilford, there was a familiar subplot to the fixture.

However, just before half-time, Victor Doleweerd restored Newham’s advantage with a composed finish, sending the hosts into the break 2–1 ahead.

Hackney came out with renewed energy and pushed for an equaliser, which came midway through the half when Leo Pola, in brilliant scoring form, fired home to make it 2–2.

Both sides had chances in a tense final quarter, but just as it looked like the game would end level, Newham captain Jonathan Ogunsanya struck a late winner to seal all three points for the home side.

A disappointing result for Hackney, who once again showed their attacking quality but were left to rue defensive lapses and missed chances. The focus now turns to their next fixture — a home clash against White Ensign FC — where Ernest’s men will look to bounce back and rediscover consistency.
