Hackney Wick FC crashed out of the London Senior Cup following a disappointing 3-0 defeat away to Corinthian-Casuals, in a match where moments of quality and costly defensive errors proved the difference.
The hosts broke the deadlock in the 30th minute after Hackney failed to clear their lines. The loose ball fell invitingly to Shay Matthews on the edge of the penalty area, and he produced a superb curling effort that left the goalkeeper with little chance, giving Corinthian-Casuals a deserved lead.
Hackney attempted to work their way back into the contest but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, with the home side looking the more threatening in the attacking third.
Trailing by a single goal, the Wick remained in the contest heading into the latter stages, but their hopes of a comeback were dealt a major blow in the 72nd minute when the Hackney goalkeeper conceded a penalty. Ousmane Balde Dansoko stepped up and converted from the spot to double the hosts' advantage.
Just four minutes later, Corinthian-Casuals put the game beyond doubt with another moment of quality. Toby Nelson produced a brilliant free kick from 25 yards, finding the net to make it 3-0 and effectively end any hopes of a Hackney revival.
The final stages saw Hackney unable to find a response as the home side comfortably saw out the contest to secure their place in the next round.
For Hackney, it was another frustrating outing in a difficult run of form. While the hosts produced two excellent finishes, the Wick will be disappointed with the manner in which the goals were conceded, particularly the failure to clear their lines for the opener and the penalty that ultimately put the game out of reach.
With their London Senior Cup campaign now over, Hackney must turn their attention back to league matters, where improved defensive discipline and greater attacking creativity will be essential if they are to turn their fortunes around.
