MATCH REPORT BY JUSTIN ELLIS

Friday night saw Hackney Wick welcome West Essex to the Wickers’ home ground for an FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie, with both sides heading into the contest in confident mood following positive starts to the new campaign.

Hackney Wick opened their season with an impressive victory over White Ensign, while West Essex secured a valuable point against Essex Senior League title favourites Heybridge Swifts. With both teams carrying early-season momentum, an intriguing cup tie was in store, with a place in the Preliminary Round up for grabs.

The opening half proved to be a tight and cagey affair, with neither side able to create many clear-cut opportunities. West Essex looked particularly dangerous from set pieces, putting the Hackney Wick defence under pressure on a few occasions.

Both teams came close to breaking the deadlock, with the woodwork coming to the rescue for each side during an evenly contested first half. The two defences largely stood firm and the sides went into the interval goalless.

The second half followed much of the same pattern. Chances remained at a premium as both teams battled hard in midfield and struggled to find a way through two well-organised defences.

Just when it looked as though extra time might be on the cards, West Essex finally found the breakthrough in the 88th minute.

Fahad Nazor was left with space inside the box and made no mistake, producing a composed finish to put the visitors 1–0 ahead with just minutes remaining.

Hackney Wick pushed forward in search of a late equaliser and tried to respond, but West Essex held firm during the closing stages to secure their place in the next round of the FA Cup.

It was ultimately a frustrating night for the Wickers in a game where fine margins proved decisive. For West Essex, Nazor’s late finish was enough to settle a closely fought cup tie and send them through to the Preliminary Round.

Full-time: Hackney Wick 0–1 West Essex

Congratulations to West Essex on the victory, and we wish them all the best in the next round of the FA Cup
