A breathtaking cup clash between Hackney Wick FC and Buckhurst Hill ended in dramatic fashion, with the Wickers bowing out on penalties after an unforgettable 4–4 draw in the Peter Butcher Memorial Cup.
It was a night of comebacks, momentum swings, red cards, and last-gasp drama — but ultimately one that ended in heartbreak as Hackney were unable to convert from the spot.
There was a welcome return to the starting XI for Issa Sidibe, making his first start in a month following injury, while Max Grappy was named on the bench after three months on the sidelines.
Hackney took the lead on 27 minutes when Klienti Loufi finished well after sustained pressure to make it 1–0. However, Buckhurst Hill responded before the break through Callum Maltese, who levelled the scores in the 39th minute.
Half-Time: Hackney Wick 1–1 Buckhurst Hill
The visitors struck first after the interval, with Harry Lusher giving Buckhurst Hill the lead. But Hackney hit back again when Joshua Adeojo found the net to make it 2–2.
It then appeared the game had slipped out of reach when Lusher completed his hat-trick, firing in two quick goals to put Buckhurst Hill 4–2 ahead. With time running out, elimination looked certain.
But the Wickers refused to accept defeat. In the 88th minute, Adeojo struck again to pull it back to 4–3. Moments later, Adeojo was shown a red card, leaving Hackney with ten men for the dying stages.
Then — in a moment that will live long in the memory — Andre Anderson found the net in the 95th minute to complete a stunning late comeback and force the match to penalties.
Despite the momentum, the shootout proved cruel. Hackney were unable to convert any of their three penalties, and Buckhurst Hill progressed from the spot.
