WICKERS KNOCKED OUT OF FA VASE

WICKERS KNOCKED OUT OF FA VASE

Jake Jenner24 Aug 2024 - 19:51

BRIMSDOWN 1-1 HACKNEY WICK (3-1 ON PENALTIES)

Hackney Wick bowed out of the FA Vase at the first hurdle, after a penalty shootout defeat to Brimsdown.

In a rainy Hertfordshire, the hosts had the first chance as they had a shot that flew narrowly over.

The Wickers suffered a huge blow after just 7 minutes as Seb Mohammed was forced off with an injury. Leo Pola came on to replace him.

Victory Akam had Hackney Wick’s first chance of the afternoon, as he forced a decent save from the keeper.

Brimsdown had a great chance to take the lead in the 36th minute. The Wickers failed to clear a free kick and the ball dropped nicely but was struck well wide in the end.

Victory had another chance shortly afterwards but he fired wide from just outside the box.

At the start of first half injury time, Leo’s cross-cum-shot forced the keeper into an awkward save, but the resulting corner came to nothing.

HT: BRIMSDOWN 0-0 HACKNEY WICK

Hackney Wick took the lead five minutes after the break as David Woods’ precise cross was met by Victory, who headed in!

Brimsdown equalised just 10 minutes later, with an equally well-taken header.

The Wickers looked to restore their lead almost immediately. Adam Cheniti’s low free kick caused problems in the Brimsdown box, but was eventually cleared for a corner.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men with just over 20 minutes to go, as goalscorer Samuel Benson hauled down Victory as he ran through on goal. The resulting free kick was well parried by the keeper.

The extra man advantage did not really benefit Hackney Wick, and instead Brimsdown had the best chance in the latter stages. Hackney Wick keeper Bartz Klimkiewicz played a poor pass from the back, leaving himself stranded and presenting the attacker with an open goal. However, the shot was weak and bobbled harmlessly wide.

With nothing to separate the sides after 90 minutes, the tie headed to penalties.

Brimsdown took first, and scored.

Ben Lewis-Gold was then denied by the keeper.

Brimsdown hit their second penalty off the bar, and Max Grappy took full advantage, coolly converting to level the score.

Bartz saved the next penalty, but Adam then saw his effort stopped.

The hosts scored their 4th spot kick, before Kleinti Loufi was denied.

Brimsdown made no mistake from their final penalty, securing them a 3-1 shootout win.
