League Cup Final
History was made as Hackney Wick FC lifted their first-ever piece of silverware, defeating rivals Harlow Town 2-1 in the League Cup Final—a perfect moment of revenge after being narrowly edged out by Harlow for the league title on goal difference.
In front of a large and lively crowd, the Wickers showed their intent early on. Who else but Issa Sidibe opened the scoring in the 12th minute with an absolute screamer into the top bins, sending Hackney fans wild. Sidibe nearly doubled his tally moments later, but a heavy touch allowed the keeper to collect.
Harlow, largely reliant on long throws and direct balls, struggled to break down a well-organised Hackney defence, and the sides went into halftime with Hackney holding a deserved 1-0 lead.
The second half saw Harlow throw everything forward, sending dangerous crosses into the box, but Hackney stood firm. Leo Pola came close to sealing the win, hitting the post when clean through. Minutes later, Sidibe made no mistake, calmly slotting home for his second of the match to put Hackney 2-0 up.
Harlow did pull one back in stoppage time, but it was too little, too late. The final whistle blew, and Hackney Wick were crowned League Cup champions for the first time in the club’s history.
Now all eyes turn to next Tuesday’s Play-Off Final, where Hackney await the winner of AS London vs Rayleigh Town. A potential double is within reach.
